DESERT CHRISTIAN GIRLS REACH STATE SOCCER FINAL

With two close wins in the playoffs over the weekend, the Desert Christian girls soccer team is headed to the state championship game.

The Eagles (14-4-1) were tied with Payson with no time left on the clock in the second overtime in the first round on Friday, but the team won a shoot-out and moved on to Saturday's second round.   Desert Christian scored early in the second half to defeat Show Low 1-0 on Saturday.  Coach Mark Harting said the game was "phenomenal." Junior captain Haleigh Powell took three straight corner kicks and bent in the ball on her third shot for the winning goal.   The Eagles will face defending state champion Blue Ridge at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.  Desert Christian lost in the first round in state last year.

"We're in uncharted waters, and the great thing is for the work they've done these girls get a trophy one way or another," Harting said.
